Each year the SHS Alumni Association gives the seniors of SHS the opportunity of receiving scholarships based on a system of online applications.

“We’re really proud of it, I’m not to sure there too many schools that give away $50,000 every year it’s kind of a rare thing with our alumni and our donors. It’s really amazing,” vice president of the SHS Alumni Association Mr. Brent Bockelmon said.

The SHS Alumni Association is currently offering approximately 60 of their annual scholarships totaling to nearly $50,000 put toward the seniors if SHS.

Each of the approximately 60 scholarships range anywhere from $500 to $1000. The scholarships are made possible predominantly by SHS Alumni who would like to give back to their high school as well as its students. Therefore they accept donations for their annual scholarships, which in some cases, allows those who donate a considerable amount to the program are able to create a set of standards for the student who will receive the scholarship such as having a certain gpa, being a part of the music department and or participation in certain sports. The students who are interested in applying are able to fill out an online application that can be found on the SHS Alumni Association website homepage, southportalumni.com. This year is the first time in which the association has used an online application system as opposed to years previous when the applications were filled out on paper then turned into the association. They believe that the online applications will be more convenient and organized for the selection committee while deciding the recipients according to Bocklemon.

These scholarships can be highly beneficial to seniors, and are considered to be very simple especially in terms of applying, according to guidance director Mrs. Julie Fierce.

“You click on the link, and you apply. It’s really that easy,” Fierce said.

The recipients of these Alumni scholarships will be personally informed before Spring Intercession, after the selection committee has reviewed and decided each scholarship. All recipients will then be invited to attend a banquet in their honor.

The deadline for the electronic application is Friday, Feb. 6. Seniors who would like to apply can click the following link for the online application.
