Girls Volleyball season preview

Turn away if you’ve heard this before: the girls’ volleyball team has a new head coach. After a 10-16 season that included six and seven game losing streak, the Cardinals hired Christina Vaeth. Vaeth is the third coach in four years for the team.

“She’s just doing what she can to let us have a winning season,” senior captain Shayla Wright said. “She (Vaeth) actually coaches us and teaches us. She shows us what’s right and what’s wrong and how to fix our mistakes.”

The team returns 7 seniors that have been playing together since the 7th grade, including last year’s assists leader Wright. With all the experience, Wright hopes to complete that winning season that the Lady Cards haven’t accomplished since 2010.

While Wright is optimistic about having three different coaches in four years, fellow senior captain Nicole Bixler views it differently.

“It’s kind of crappy,” Bixler said. “We get used to a coach and then we have to go to another coach’s ways and its just gets confusing.

Even though they may have different views on the coaching situations, both desire the same thing out of their last year here at Southport.

“I want to win,” said Wright.

Vaeth thinks she can make that happen.

“My expectations are big for this team,” Vaeth said. “There is a lot of talent, so I expect us to win some big games and learn from our mistakes.”
