Lady Cards win first home game against Franklin Community
The SHS girls basketball team found success in its home opener against Franklin Community High School. The JV team took the game 50-49 and varsity came out with a 53-49 win. Coming off the first few games of the season without winning, the team hopes this sets the right tone for more wins in the season.
The JV team started the night with an exciting overtime victory, after a disappointing first half, when the Southport team was struggling. They had created a 14-point deficit by allowing Franklin to put up 34 points in the first half. Freshman Miranda Deane spearheaded the comeback by scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter and a three-pointer in overtime to secure the victory.
The varsity game carried the winning momentum. The opening quarter was essential to their victory. By the start of the second quarter Southport lead by 9 with a score of 17-8.
“We came out really strong, so we got the lead,“ said Raisor “That helped us out throughout the whole game.“
The team struggled offensively in the second quarter by only scoring five, but their strong defensive hold kept the team in winning position. By halftime their lead had been cut to three with a score of 22-19.
Raisor mentioned she found struggles with “not fouling and boxing out.“ This might have contributed to points given up by Southport, but were still the winning team at the end of the night.
Franklin Community never recovered from their fallback in the first quarter, and came up four points short of a win. According to senior Raisor, SHS did a good job of pushing the ball, and the opposing team did not have an answer for it.
Junior Kyra Duncan put up big numbers for the team. With 19 points, she was the leading scorer and a major contributor to the win. She also knocked down four out of her five free throws.
Southport girls basketball was able win their first home game of the season in the familiar Southport Fieldhouse, with plenty of fans cheering them on.
