SHS girls’ volleyball snags win against Beech Grove Hornets
For their senior night on Sep. 23, the SHS girls’ volleyball team rolled over the Beech Grove Hornets to victory. The Lady Cards pushed their record to 8-4.
The Lady Cards will keep tonight’s win in mind as they prepare for their next match on Sep. 25 against the Whiteland Warriors.
“I feel like we knew we were going to win so we performed lower than we can, but they got the job done and that’s all that matters,” head coach Chelsea Hoffman said.
As the first set began, both teams were still warming up and getting into a rhythm. Solid defense was crucial in the first set as senior Nicole Vidaurre stepped up and led the team with 19 digs. The Lady Cards won the first set with a score of 25-11.
“Nicole had one of her best defensive games she’s had,” Hoffman said. “She definitely stepped up for us.”
In an evenly matched second set, the Lady Cards fell to the Hornets 26-24. Senior Lauren Cullison kept the Lady Cards within striking distance until the end.
As the Lady Cards moved into sets three and four, they began to slowly build momentum that would carry them to win the final two sets. The team went on a scoring streak that allowed them to outscore the Hornets 50-34 in the final two sets.
While the Lady Cards won tonight, it would not have been without the contributing effort from everyone on the team. Their leading offensive player Cullison led the team with 24 kills. On the opposite end was Vidaurre setting the tempo for their defense.
