As the field was lit up and the game was about to end, the Cards could have looked up at the scoreboard and saw they had the win.
The boys varsity soccer team won 5-2 over the Columbus North Bulldogs, who were ranked 14th in the state last night on Sept. 30 at Holder Field.
For the first 28 minutes, nothing was really happening for the Cards. But after a yellow card, they had the opportunity to score on a free kick, which is exactly what senior Joshua Antunez did to tie the game up 1-1.
The score stayed the same for the first half, and going into halftime, the Cards were still tied up with the Bulldogs with one goal each.
In the second half, though, the Cards didn’t waste much time to take the lead as senior Maradon Ebuela scored a few feet away from the goal to give them their first lead of the night.
Time went by and the score stayed the same, but with 26:49 left in the game, the Bulldogs scored to tie the game up again.
However, Ebuela wasn’t done helping the Cards.
SHS had the 3-2 lead when Ebuela started dribbling the ball, getting around his defenders and past the goalie to score on the open goal, giving him his second goal of the night.
“That was really awesome,” Ebuela said. “It was just amazing.”
Head coach David Stroup reflected on Ebuela’s talent that night.
“He was excellent,” Stroup said. “That’s what I kind have been expecting out of him all season … and when he’s on it, he is one of the best players in the state.”
The team finished off the scoring with a goal by senior Job Koko to give the Cards a 5-2 lead, which ended up being the final score of the game.
“I’m really proud,” Stroup said. “I think this was probably our best all-around game defensively, moving the ball, putting the balls in the back of the net.”
SHS was led by Ebuela, who scored two goals, freshman Alexander Yes, Antunez and Koko, who all scored one.
The Cards have one more game against Brownsburg on Thursday, Oct. 3 before sectionals start next week.
