The Grammy Awards, originally launched in 1959 as part of a Hollywood Walk of Fame project, have since evolved into an annual event that recognizes excellence in music, celebrates artists’ well-being and reinforces music as a cornerstone of culture.
Over the years, the Grammys have grown into a prestigious institution, best known for awarding Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Album of the Year.
At SHS, students have made predictions and expectations for the artists who are going to win the four most known awards.
Freshman Beau Kellams predicts that Record of the Year will go to “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter.
Carpenter, who began her career as Maya Hart on Disney Channel’s “Girl meets World,” has been passionate about singing since she was 10. Some consider her first music breakthrough to be her single “Espresso,” which Carpenter says is a song about feeling good and not taking things too seriously.
“It’s not personally one of my favorite songs,” Kellams said. “But I think she’s become a big artist, and it was very big on TikTok.”
For Best New Artist, many students are rooting for Chappell Roan.
Roan, born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, was 13 when she started to get a passion into singing. In 2023, she got her breakthrough with the album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.” As of 2024, her single “Good Luck, Babe!” has been her most known song, reaching top five in the U.S. Billboards 200.
“I’m excited to see who wins Best New Artist,” sophomore Piper Leber said. “One of my favorite artists, Chappell Roan, was nominated.”
With eight nominations for Album of the Year, “BRAT” by Charli XCX is considered a “cultural phenomenon,” according to Time Magazine.
“One (album) I have stuck with most is probably ‘BRAT’ by Charli XCX,” senior Bryson Martinez said. “It had the most impact, especially during last summer.”
“BRAT” is an album by Charli XCX, born Charlotte Emma Aitchison, that is related to early 2000s raves but with a more aggressive club sound to it. The album gained traction during the 2024 presidential election, in which it was frequently referenced in discussions surrounding Vice President Kamala Harris, with some calling her “BRAT” to insinuate her bold confidence.
For the Song of the Year, sophomore Sung Tial is thinking “Die With A Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars will take the win.
Other students are rooting for the song “Die With A Smile,” which explores the reality of a limited lifespan and spending one’s final moments with loved ones. It quickly became very popular, reaching the top spot on the Billboard Global 200 within a five month span, because of its jazzy, musical charm and uplifting mood.
Since its establishment, the Grammys have become a globally recognized event that honors the most influential arts in the industry. At the 2025 Grammys, the audience will know who the “best” musical artists of the year are, as well as receive live performances of their favorite artists.
As the event unfolds, SHS students eagerly await the results, curious to see if their predictions will come true. This year’s Grammys will host a variety of well-known artists and albums, taking place at Crypto Arena in Los Angeles and streamed on Paramount+ and CBS, both starting at 8 in the evening.
