As the 2024-25 winter sports season is coming to a close, fans should take the opportunity to see the winter athletes at least one more time before their season ends. Here are a few more games to look forward to and some new Cards to watch:
Game #1
The girls basketball season is coming to an end, but they have one more chance to leave their mark at SHS with their sectional matchup against the Franklin Central Flashes tomorrow. The game begins at 6 p.m. at Franklin Central.
The Lady Cards finished their regular season with a record of 12-9 and a third place finish in the conference.
Senior Ryleigh Hamilton is looking forward to keep playing how she is playing.
“(I’m looking forward to) playing hard, going out there and competing and playing with my friends like how I always do, ” Hamilton said.
Players to look out for are seniors Kassie McMasters and Hamilton, who led the team in 11 of the 13 major statistics in the regular season.
The Lady Cards are looking to win this game and continue to go on a hot streak to make a run for another state championship.
Game #2
With the end of winter sports, the regular season turns into the state tournament, which is what is happening with girls swimming. The team is heading into sectionals on Saturday at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Most students don’t know much about a swim meet, let alone sectionals, so here are some basics that you can look out for.
There are four strokes that swimmers could be participating in: backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly or freestyle. Swimmers also have many different distances that they need to complete, ranging from to 50 yards all the way up to 500. There are also team events consisting of four swimmers trying to get the fastest time.
The Lady Cards, as individuals and a team, will have their seasons on the line during this meet. This is one of the, if not the most, biggest meets of the year that you should go out and see for yourself.
Athlete #1
The boys basketball team has been through a bit of a rough patch with a 2-3 record in their last five games, but one of the mainstays in their starting five is junior James Kalala.
As of Feb. 3, Kalala is leading the team in five of the teams 13 major statistics, including field goal percentage with 58%, blocks per game with 0.6 and rebounds per games with 8.5.
Kalala, who has been a starter for his first two seasons at SHS, has won Maxpreps Basketball Player of the Game against Bloomington North, Beech Grove and Columbus North.
Head Coach Ben Rhodes has put trust in Kalala to help lead this team.
“He has been a good leader by example,” Rhodes said. “That’s been very appreciated by me, the coaches (and) for all the other players.”
You can see Kalala and the rest of the team looking for their next win of the season against the New Palestine Dragons at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Athlete #2
With the girls swim team heading to sectionals this weekend, the leaders will need to step up, with one of which is senior Sydney Hartman.
Hartman has been on the swim team since her freshman year and is statistically one of the team’s best swimmers.
According to Swimcloud, Hartman placed eighth in the 100 yard butterfly and fifth in the 100 yard backstroke in the Marion County Championship.
Hartman is also one of those teammates who is very supportive. She has hosted team bonding events and is very vocal on the sidelines by cheering on her teammates to keep going.
As the Lady Cards finish off the season, Hartman will be competitive in the races and supportive on the sidelines.
