Girls golf team has high hopes for the 2015 season
After coming off of a 1-11 dual meet record last year, the girls golf team is striving for a better year. The team has two very experienced seniors, Chloe Marsh and Htayni Sui, who are looking to be strong leaders and help the team succeed in this new season.
Marsh is going to be looked upon as a leader on this year’s team. Marsh has played golf since she was seven years old. She had a score of 83 at Southern Dunes last year.
“A personal goal of mine is to beat my best score from last year and qualify for the regionals as either a team or individual,” Marsh said. “As a team I would just like to have a fun year with all my girls and make it the best (season) yet.”
The 2014 team got seventh place out of eight in the Conference Indiana standings, 11th place in the county tournament, and fifth place at the sectionals tournament. Another highlight was their win against Cardinal Ritter.
Coach Bob Humbles has high expectations for this year’s team. He hopes to win at least half of the team’s regular season matches. They will be welcoming two freshmen this year, Zoey Ozolins and Elizabeth Lamkin, who both played on the Southport Middle School girl’s golf team.
“With three people returning, I’m hoping we’re shooting for qualifying for the regionals,” Humbles said.
The girls opened the season Aug. 5 by defeating Lawrence Central with a score of 214-225.
