Senior Chase Cawthorne follows through on a serve. Cawthorne fell to his Decatur Central opponent in a tie-breaker.

The SHS boy’s tennis team played their first sectional match and also got their first win of the season.

The Cards played the Decatur Central Hawks and beat them, 3-2. The team was lead by freshmen Colston Streit and Noah Hall. Streit and Hall won both of their doubles sets 6-1 and 6-1.

The number two doubles team was composed of freshmen John Gunderson and Jacob Peters. Gunderson and Peters also won both sets with scores of 6-1 and 6-2.

Chase Cawthorne was number one singles and lost in the tiebreaker set. He lost the first set, 2-6, and tied, 6-6, in the second. He then played a tiebreaker set and couldn’t match the opponent’s aggression. Junior Dane Haynes played two singles and lost both sets with scores of 1-6 and 1-6. Zach Bozarts played number three singles and shutout the opponent with scores of 6-0 and 5-0.

Coach Harry Schwartz was very pleased with how his players executed.

“I think they came in a little more confident and we have five freshmen in the starting lineup, and all five freshmen won today. A lot of them just needed this for confidence,” said Schwartz.
