Canned food drive to benefit Hunger Inc.
SHS is holding their annual Canned Food Drive Nov. 9 through Nov. 24. All the food donated will go to benefit Hunger, Inc. Hunger, Inc. is a non-profit organization that has been distributing food to residents of Perry Township and Beech Grove since 1983. Their mission is to supply food to those who exhibit immediate need. These clients—usually experiencing an array of crises varying from unemployment, unexpected medical bills or a reduction or fluctuation in their income—receive assistance with enough food to last several days.
Donations to Hunger, Inc. come in a variety of different ways. They receive regular donations from several southside institutions, churches, organizations, businesses, and individuals such as SHS students through participation in the canned food drive. During the canned food drive, every classroom in SHS will be competing over which classroom will raise the most money and donate the most canned food. The three classrooms with the most donations win a breakfast provided by the School Council.
According to hungerinc.org, more than 148,000 lbs. of food were distributed by the pantry to feed more than 15,100 people in 2013. SHS plans to continue to contribute to the cause by seeking out the aid of family members, neighbors and community members to work towards collecting canned and non-perishable goods for those who are in need. Needed food items include cereal, soup, canned fruit, etc. For the full list of needed food items, visit hungerinc.org and volunteer to help thousands of southside clients who benefit from the organization. Hunger, Inc. is located at 1416 E. Epler Ave. Indianapolis, Indiana 46227 and operate on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
