Lady Cards soccer team falls in season opener

The SHS girls soccer team has gotten off to an upsetting start of the season, having lost their first match of the year to Lawrence Central with a final score of 2-0.

It was a tough match throughout, having to deal with pouring rain at times. The Bears scored their first goal in the first half and led the Cards 1-0.

It was a physical day with many defensive plays throughout the entire match. Often times players on both teams would spend much of their time on the ground. Whether they were shoved, tripped or diving for a ball. The physicality of the match seemed to get more intense during the second half. However, SHS’s defense seemed to struggle as they attempted to guard the Bears.

“We played really hard,” senior Jordan Cox said. “Our biggest problem though is we were giving (the Lawrence Central players) space, and they took advantage of that space.”

The second Lawrence Central goal was scored near the ten minute mark of the second half. This served as assurance as SHS couldn’t come back.
