Cards soar over Panthers to advance to county semi-finals

The clash of the unbeatens and number one ranked teams took place Wednesday night  in the Quarterfinals of the Marion County boys basketball tournament.  Southport (class 4A number one ranked) beat Park Tudor (class 2A number one ranked) 54-47.

Sophomore Paul Scruggs led the Cards with 17 points and 5 assists.  He also made six total free throws and his transition plays helped hold off Park Tudor in a late comeback attempt.

“I hustled every play, and tried to help my team get every single rebound,” Scruggs said.

SHS’s physical plays helped them gain an edge when it came to scoring inside, but the Panthers outscored the Cards from beyond the three point arc, 24 points to nine.

Going forward, head coach Kyle Simpson is confident Cards can continue to beat teams en route to a the county championship.

“Whoever we play, we’re going to get their best shot, but you know what, (We’ll) take anybody in our house,” Simpson said.

The Cards play Pike, Friday night in the fieldhouse at 7:45 following the Ben Davis, Warren Central game.
