New decisions from higher up administration at Perry Township involving teachers and physically active roles at pep sessions are soon to take effect following the cancellation of the Senior vs. Staff basketball game.
This update has come after new precautions have been made in order to ensure the safety of teachers. A teacher getting hurt could cost the school thousands of dollars in hospital bills.
“We take a lot of opportunities to assess risk. We do that with our insurance provider,” Superintendent Patrick Spray said. “Workers’ comp insurance is what we, as employers, pay so that when someone does get hurt on the job, that’s what covers their medical expenses.”
After six years of hosting the Senior vs Staff basketball game, the Booster Club has been forced to cancel it. This decision has garnered various reactions from both teachers and students, as it was a part of the long-awaited winter pep session.
“We were told it was canceled, so we didn’t have anything to do with it,” Booster Club sponsor Stacy Matlock said. “It takes away so much from the kids.”
Seniors are now left without the opportunity to participate in the tradition, leaving many of them upset, including senior Sophia Nguyen.
“I feel that it is a memory seniors want to make before they go off,” Nguyen said.
The disappointment doesn’t just stop with students, but it also follows the teachers, especially those who have played often, such as business teacher Brendan Dudas.
“I think that’s one of the events that everybody really looks forward to,” Dudas said.
With the cancellation of the basketball game, change is sure to follow in the winter pep session. It is likely that there will be new activities at this pep session in order to accommodate the unexpected update.
