Tomorrow, Jan. 17, three wrestlers from SHS will compete in the IHSAA Girls Wrestling State Tournament at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
“We have three absolute rock stars going. We’re looking forward to a pretty cool and competitive evening,” head coach Nick Skinner said.
Freshman Hope Senteney is the first Cardinal that will be taking the mat. She has made a monumental achievement already by making state in only her first year wrestling for SHS. She will be wrestling in the 125 lbs division at state, and her record leading up to the event is 8-6.
Senior AvaLyn Mosconi is no stranger to the mat. She will be wrestling in the 155 lbs division, and her current record of 6-1 is only one match away from being undefeated.
Lastly, senior Kyla Johnson will be wrestling in the 135 lbs division. Johnson is currently ranked number one in the state and is predicted to take home a title for SHS.
“I’m really hopeful that me, Ava and Hope can win a team state title,” Johnson said.
Skinner has formed a close relationship with the team over the years and knows their potential. Although he knows that it may nerve wracking for the girls considering the significance of this opportunity, he believes that they have the preparation they need and will be able to bring home the title.
“Being the first time, I think nerves are gonna be a little different,” Skinner said. “But we’re going to do us and do the things we do well.”
It is going to be a long day for the team. The gates open at 8:30 a.m., but final rounds won’t begin until 7 p.m.
Due to this, Skinner is planning on renting out a house the girls will be able to rest at throughout the day.
He knows that while the girls are in a tense environment, they won’t be able to relax and take their mind off of their next match.
“I want to let them take their mind off of wrestling at the house so they can relax emotionally, physically and mentally,” Skinner said.
While the girls have some tough matches ahead of them, they are hopeful to bring a title back home to SHS.
