SHS Librarian Media Specialist Sara Kohne started the educational contest located in the IMC (Instructional Media Center) two years ago and has continued to keep them going.
The purpose of the contest is to help encourage learning and to get students to read more and check out books while also being a fun competition and a way to win prizes.
“We want people to enjoy the library and think it has something good to offer them,” Kohne said.
Multiple contests happen throughout the school year and each one is different.
The most recent contest was in honor of National Dog Month. The contest was called “Who’s My Human?” The contests are different each time and are set up to follow what’s happening in the world.
“So it just depends on what month it is,” Kohne said. “And so we try to do things to help students learn passively by walking around the library and looking kind of like you want a museum.”
It costs no money and everyone in the school is welcome to participate.
The contest is simple to enter and all that’s needed to play is a pencil and a provided piece of paper from the IMC. After that, anyone can answer the questions, and return the paper back to the IMC.
“(Banned Books Week) is a week in celebration of books that have been banned or challenged in certain libraries,” Kohne said. “Certainly Banned Books Week is a big week in Library Land.”
Participating in the contest is a way for students to learn more and have fun, while also providing them the chance to win prizes.
Kohne conducts the IMC contests to get students reading and give them learning opportunities, while also a chance to enjoy themselves.
“I really like the contest they do because it’s just fun to do,” sophomore Steven Schafer said.
