There’s a high chance that you’ve heard the saying, “Grades don’t define you.” But have you really taken it to heart?
A survey conducted in 2022 by The Glen Bard, a student news site, says that 87% of students surveyed said their grades have affected their self worth, with over a quarter being affected negatively.
As the end of the semester approaches, fellow students and friends express how they’re stressed about a test or how they have so much work to do.
But regardless of whatever you get on a quiz, test or grade in a class, it doesn’t change the fact that you tried your best.
If you’re like me, grades are very important to you. It hurts to see a perfect stream of A’s get interrupted by a B.

So, to fix that, we work hard by studying, finishing assignments and dedicating hours to school. At times, it pays off, but it isn’t always rewarding. Sometimes, we get bad grades regardless of how hard we work, and it discourages us.
I remember how I used to work countless hours after school studying for tests, quizzes and doing homework. This would cause my health to deteriorate little by little everyday.
This all led to me becoming severely sick. Regardless, I still went to school to take a final. I didn’t get the grade I wanted and sobbed about it instead of focusing on my health.
It wasn’t until my mom snapped me out of it that I realized my grades don’t matter as much as I thought they did.
The truth is, your grades will never perfectly depict how smart you are or how successful you’ll be in the future.
In fact, there are countless celebrities who didn’t do well in school but are still successful. People like Walt Disney, Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey and even Albert Einstein dropped out or didn’t do well in school but still managed to live a good life.
Now, I’m not saying you should stop trying in your classes. But instead, look at bad grades in a different light. Look at them as something to learn and grow from.
We can’t be perfect all the time. We’re humans, and we’re born to make mistakes. So it’s okay if your grades aren’t up to par with your expectations. Nobody is going to look at you differently because you slipped up on a test.

Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. Some might be good at taking tests while others might not, but that doesn’t mean one person is smarter than the other, not even close.
There are many different factors that show how smart a person is, and taking a test is only a sliver of that. People can be smart in different ways, whether that be in art, music, science or mathematics.
Therefore, don’t limit the measure of your intelligence to just tests because there is no limit, and we’re always learning.
The next time you get a bad grade in anything, just remember that it’s a piece of paper. It doesn’t define you, and it certainly doesn’t show how smart you are.
