Cards boys volleyball team looks “springboard” into the state championship with a win

The state tournament begins Saturday for boy’s volleyball. SHS has one more week to get ready for the “make or break” part of their season.

Last year, the Cards were ousted in the opening round of the state tournament. This year, much of the core group from that loss is back as seniors, and the team is ranked third in the state.

To prepare for the tournament, the Cards have been working on game mechanics and studying film.

“Our practices have veered off of conditioning and we’ve been focusing on the little aspects of volleyball, such as proper blocking position and doing more stuff to (prepare) for other teams,” assistant coach Ethan Coffman said.

The team will also use Wednesday’s game against Scecina to springboard into the tournament by honing skills that the team has been working on during practice. This will be their last chance to play in a game before the state tournament begins on May 15.

Scecina comes into the game with a near even record of 13-14. SHS comes in with a 20-9 record and ranked third in the state.

The junior varsity game starts at 6:00 and varsity starts at 7:30 in the Fieldhouse.
