Girls golf team focused on teaching new players ins and outs of sport

Albert Einstein once said, “The only source of knowledge is experience.” In that case the girls golf team will have to educate four new girls on the team who have never played golf in their lives.

The new girls this year are juniors Kaileigh Thomas, Ashley Orellana and Sophia Craig and freshman Maya Peterson-womack.

Head coach Bob Humbles and the rest of the girls are working to help the new golfers learn the ropes. The girls are learning different techniques and strokes with the team.

The new golfers are also adjusting to their home course, Southern Dunes Golf Course.

Coach Humbles believes the new girls golfers have potential, but that it will take some time for them to learn and adjust to the sport. Humbles also thinks the extra training and coaching devoted to the new girls could possibly result in a slow start to the season.

The girls ended last season by placing fourth in the 2013 IHSAA Girls Golf Sectional Meet, finishing with a total score of 374. The girls hope to come back into this season ready to place in the top three at the 2014 IHSAA Girls Golf Sectional Meet.

For the girl golfers to place higher this year, most of the focus will be on the training and coaching of the four new inexperienced girls.
