News Brief: ‘Trumpcare’ in Congress

David Worland, Reporter

Republicans have proposed a new healthcare plan in place of the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare. The new bill, which is called the American Health Care Act and was proposed on March 6, would keep certain parts of Obamacare and add new aspects.

Obamacare required people who could afford it to acquire health insurance or they would face a tax penalty. Insurance was also made affordable to older and sicker citizens.

The new bill, if passed, would change this by allowing people not to pay a tax penalty if they don’t want to buy insurance. A problem that has sprouted up because of this is healthy people would be less likely to buy insurance. This would result in insurance being more costly for the people who decide they need insurance.
