Following last week’s 21-3 loss against Roncalli, the SHS football team looks to bounce back against former 5A State champions, the Westfield Shamrocks. With both offense and defense looking a little off, Offensive Coordinator Brian Dugger believes that if just a little few mental changes happen, Southport can beat Westfield.

“It’s about limiting mistakes,” Dugger said. “Last year against them, it’s 0-0 for almost the whole first half and we had one mistake on defense where they did a trick play and got down ended up scoring off of it.”

Southport ended up giving up four turnovers and Westfield won last year 27-0. However, Westfield graduated 23 seniors last year. Those include their starting quarterback, one running back and two wide receivers. All three contributed to the game last year with a combined 297 yards in passing, rushing and receiving. Westfield had a total of 323 offensive yards compared to Southport’s 205.

Westfield won last week against Harrison Raiders 22-7. Westfield had a total of 359 all purpose yards, led by seniors Koby Hauser and Kaleb Pettijohn. Hauser had a total of 88 yards, those being 27 rushing, 38 punt return yards and 23 yard in an interception return. Pettijohn had a total of 53 yards, with those being 21 receiving yards and 32 kick return yards.

This game is tonight at Lucas Oil Stadium and kickoff is at 8:30.
