Junior Ryan Lezon drives to the basket against a defender fro Franklin Community on Jan. 24. SHS lost the game in overtime 47-45.

On Jan. 24, the SHS boys basketball team was a part of “The Really Big Basketball Show” at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. SHS played the last of five games that day, as they took on the Franklin Community Grizzly Cubs. SHS went on to lose against the Cubs in overtime, 47-45.

Head coach Eric Brand was stunned after the loss and had little words for the team.

¨We’ve got to get better,” Brand said.

The ball has not been falling in SHS´s favor as of late. Their loss to the Cubs was the third game in a row they have lost by just one possession. On Jan. 16, SHS lost 86-85 in a quadruple overtime classic against Beech Grove and 49-48 to Columbus North this past Friday.

In the game at Bankers Life, the two leading scorers for SHS were junior guard Brevin Jefferson with 10 points and junior Matthew Munoz with nine. Jefferson’s efficiency wasn’t the best, shooting just a 38 percent. While being down in the fourth quarter, Jefferson ignited the comeback for SHS with a clutch steal, which led to a basket and helped lead to overtime.

Looking for ways to improve as a team and to get out of the losing streak SHS finds itself in, Jefferson turns to practice, and says that the team needs to do a better job of pushing themselves.

SHS’s next game is on Feb. 2. They will be travelling to Decatur Central to take on the Decatur Central Eagles.
