With the season’s end in sight for the SHS boys tennis team, they begin to make final preparations and look forward to sectionals. The Cards start their state tournament run on Sept. 30 with their sectionals at home.

According to head coach Anteneh Teshome, he expects nothing less than winning from the team, with juniors Micah Fishel and Thang Chin at the forefront for the Cards.

Teshome and Chin also state that the team has switched up their practicing format for sectionals by focusing on the basics of the game and preparing for longer and tougher matches.

“For the last couple of days (we) have specifically been preparing for this tournament,” Teshome said.

Because the Cards are not starting seniors for sectionals, many others must step up and fill the gap that has been created.  According to Chin, he expects to see many of his teammates stepping up and playing very well.

“I expect Micah, first single, me third single, and first doubles, Andrew Youmans and Rokim Thang, to do very well in the tournament.” Chin said.

Fishel has already envisioned moments during his matches and plans on winning the whole tournament.

“I plan on winning sectionals and very much could if I play very well,” Fishel said.

The Cards will have to face opponents from Decatur Central High School, PMHS, Scecina Memorial High School and Indianapolis Shortridge High School during their matches on Wednesday.

According to Fishel, the whole team wants to see good things this week from everyone on the team and many people could see the Cards going home with a sectional title.

“We’ve really tried to go into sectionals playing our best possible game we can,” Fishel said.
