Senior goalie Bi Chua kicks the ball toward the middle of the field after an attempted score by Franklin Central. The Cards lost to Franklin Central 4-1 on Sept. 16.

The SHS boys soccer team’s defense stepped up on Saturday against Bloomington South in the team’s final regular season game.  The Cards didn’t allow many shots on goal, especially in the first half, and the end result was a 2-1 victory.

“We played with determination, and we had the mentality to want to win,” senior Albert Thang said.

With the score being 0-0 at the end of the half, the Cards had to fight to finish the game. With a score by the Panthers in the second half, the Cards needed a score soon. The Cards tied the game with a goal from senior Gedion Ceu. They then continued to work to earn a lead with their second and final goal of the game coming from junior Abawi Bawi who scored in the 76th minute.

“The defense played really well,” Thang said, “but the defense was just really unlucky to concede (a goal) towards the end.”

According to head coach David Stroup, it is great to finish out the season with a win to go to sectionals.

The Cards finished their regular season with a record of 9-3-1 and finished in second place right in Conference Indiana with a 4-1 record. The Cards ended the regular season strong going into sectionals on Monday, Oct. 4.
