You first

Things you can do to prioritize yourself
You+first
Lauren Lowry

During this time of year, putting yourself first can be one of the hardest things to do. Making ourselves our first priority is the most important thing to do in difficult times. Here are some tips on how to love and put yourself first.

Be kind to yourself
To begin, downgrading and having negative thoughts about yourself is one of the reasons we have a hard time loving ourselves. To start being kinder to yourself, you can start by saying affirmations. This could be a small saying to start your day like, “I am enough,” or “I am grateful for all I have.” Talking yourself up in the mirror is a great way to start your day the right way. Try

saying “I am beautiful,” in the mirror while you’re getting ready.

Take care of yourself
Some simple ways to take care of yourself could be washing your face or taking some time to read before bed. One big thing to care of yourself is setting aside a night each each week for self-care. Doing a face mask, taking an everything shower or doing some yoga to destress from the day you’ve had.

Romanticize your life
Having a mentality that your life is the greatest it can be is another way to put yourself first. Whether you have nothing planned or you have a full day of activities, take a moment to think about how grateful you are to be able to be doing these things. Even if you’re just watching your favorite TV show after school, think about how nice it is to be relaxing in that moment.

Celebrate your accomplishments
If you’ve done something like eating a full meal or you just aced a hard test, take the time to celebrate what you accomplished. This could mean going out with friends or making a treat for yourself. Taking time out of your day to reflect or commemorate your accomplishments will boost your self-esteem and make putting yourself first easier.

Darcy Leber, Photos Editor
Hi, my name is Darcy and this is my second year on The Journal as photos editor! My first year on The Journal was such an incredible experience, I can’t wait to see what this year brings. I am a senior and have been at Southport my whole life. Besides being on The Journal, I play softball and have played since I was a kid. I am also super into music. My favorite song right now is “Cool About It” by boygenius. Anyone who knows me knows that I am an avid concert attender, and will be forever. I started going to concerts when I was 5. The most recent concert I’ve been to was Dominic Fike. My favorite concerts I’ve been to this year was the Re:Set series where I saw LCD Soundsystem, Steve Lacy and boygenius. My favorite genre of music is indie-rock or alternative. This includes my favorite band of all time, Wallows. I’ve seen them live twice, as well as met them twice. When I’m not listening to music, I am sitting around watching TV or a good movie. The TV show I am watching right now is “The O.C.” and my favorite movie of all time is “The Princess Bride.” My summer consisted of being with my best friend, Lauren and traveling to see concerts. My favorite pastime is being with my friends, no matter what we are doing. I hope you all enjoy the amazing pictures I’m going to take, because I know I will enjoy taking them!
