Since freshman year, I knew I wanted – no, needed – to be on The Journal. I was in love with all of it. The people, the process, the atmosphere. So I started sitting in on meetings, just to observe. From then on, I was hooked.
Right before spring break of last year, Mr. K announced that Top 3 applications were open. Editor-in-Chief has been my goal, and getting to hold this position has been a dream come true.
Of course, I’m beyond excited for college. I plan pursuing teaching, and I’ve been waiting for this time to come. However, there’s a natural sadness that comes with saying goodbye to the place where you’ve spent countless hours and made an innumerable amount of memories. All the late nights trying to scramble to get pages sent, all the early morning distributions are over now.
Although high school is coming to a close, it has been beyond worthwhile. I’ve had so many teachers from elementary to high school, and I’ve been able to find an appreciation for the profession I would pursue.
Perhaps one of the best teachers I’ve had the privilege of meeting is social studies teacher David Luers. I’ve had a number of social studies teachers, but thanks to his guidance, I have a new outlook on history and have learned the importance of forming my own opinions – intelligently – and feel prepared to take on whatever college can throw at me. So thank you, Luers, your influence means more than I can put into words.
Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the man who convinced me to sign up for journalism when I was in 8th grade. Mr. K is fully responsible for me finding a love for journalism and getting me to where I am today. I don’t know who I would be without him, and I can safely say that I’ll take so many things away from his class, even if it’s just how much I love the Oxford comma.
The past four years have been better than I could have imagined, and I am beyond excited to take on the next four.

Gretchen Turner, Editor-in-Chief
Wow. Hey guys! For the third and final time on staff, my name is Gretchen. It’s almost crazy to think about it being my last year because yesterday I was just a little freshman in Intro to Journalism soaking in each word that Mr. K said to me and worshiping each new issue that The Journal came out with. I still have all of them on my bookshelf. Now, coming back as a senior and the Editor-in-Chief of the publication that I’ve spent all of high school fangirling over is like a dream come true. I can’t wait to see what our staff accomplishes and to see all the memories we make together. With that being said, I also do a bunch outside of school. I am a volunteer at the Indianapolis Zoo (with the dolphins specifically), and I’ve had so much fun the past couple summers. I also am a volleyball referee during the winters. More recently, I started working at Starbucks. As busy as I sound, I make sure I’m home at least a little bit so I can spend time with my family, dogs and boyfriend. This year is going to be full of new experiences, as does anyone’s senior year, but I can’t wait to see how we grow here on The Journal!
