The SHS Cards defensive linemen set up against the PMHS Falcons as they prepare to snap the ball. The Cards lost to the Falcons 42-7 on Aug 27.

The Perry Meridian football team defeated the SHS Cardinals, 42-7. The Falcons dominated on both sides of the field with 409 total yards, while holding the Cards to just 115 yards.
“Got to get better,” head coach Alex Bettag said. “Every phase of the game, every piece of football we have to get better at.”
The only touchdown for SHS came off of a run by junior running back Christian VanVolkenburgh, who finished the game with 50 total rushing yards. The Cards as a team rushed for 68 yards.
They didn’t fare much better in the passing game. Senior quarterback Zach Shepherd was 5-12 on pass completions. At the half, the Cards traded out Shepherd for sophomore quarterback Bryce Calvert. Calvert was 5-11 on completions. The two quarterbacks combined for 67 yards.
“We just have to learn from it and build going on to next week,” Calvert said.
The Cards’ defense also looked to be in need of help, allowing a total of 288 passing yards and one touchdown, as well as 121 rushing yards and three touchdowns to the Falcons.
Bettag said that despite the loss, he was pleased with the team’s fight.
“Our guys didn’t quit again, we kept our composure, they fought to the last whistle,” Bettag said.
