We’ve all heard the songs on TikTok that are a part of the soundtrack from “Encanto” and we all know that they are quite catchy. The soundtrack is great. the movie on the other hand could use some work. Although the storyline was good and almost got the movie to the top of this list, I believed the animation was just barely better than “Luca,” another movie Disney recently produced. I would have liked to have seen something different in the animation style. Disney has a pattern of creating characters with big heads and small bodies, that overall make the characters look unproportional. It would have made the story so much better if I could picture these characters in real life. That’s hard when things are far from realistic. This movie would have been the perfect movie for Disney to try a new animation style and play around a bit. It was disappointing that they hadn’t used this chance. There’s so much action and detail that goes into this movie and having new animation would have made it a more enjoyable experience watching. They followed their pattern and even took ideas from other movies they created for some of the scenes. The scene where Luisa, Mirabel’s older sister, starts singing about the pressure she faces from this family in the song “Surface Pressure,” Disney took the idea of the background and how they made that part appear from the Disney movie “Moana.” More specifically, the part in “Moana” where she meets Maui and he sings “You’re Welcome.” Besides that, the plot wasn’t bad. This movie starts out with the backstory of the family receiving a miracle that blessed them all with “gifts.” These gifts are special powers that each member of the family has. The main character, Mirabel Madrigal, didn’t get a gift and her family has a secret grudge against her for it. It turns out that later in the movie, Mirabel not having a power and the collected trauma caused by unrealistic expectations in the family had affected the miracle. It’s revealed in the movie that it is up to Mirabel to fix it before it’s too late. This movie has major character development from Mirabel and from the rest of the family. The family makes it known just how big their grudge for Mirabel is when she doesn’t get her gift. It’s quite sad to watch her family overtime start disliking her more and more. When she meets her uncle, who had gone missing years previously, she starts to have a better understanding as to why everything is happening the way it was. Why she didn’t get a gift, why the miracle was disappearing. Her uncle had all the answers. This helps her in her journey to save the miracle and her family. Overall, it was a good movie that I’d watch again. I just feel like it needed to be a little more unique and more realistic on the animation side.
