Many things come with the Christmas season. For some, it’s religious traditions, going shopping and making food. For others, it’s watching Christmas movies.
Most know the traditional movies like “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Elf” and “Home Alone.” They all send nostalgic, heartwarming messages to viewers while remaining entertaining, which is why they are so popular.
But what about other movies? There are movies not everyone may be familiar with, but they also have good plots.
“Grumpy Old Men,” “Rise of the Guardians” and “Prancer” are some underrated movies that one can watch during the Christmas season.
“Grumpy Old Men” is about two elderly next-door neighbors who have had a multi-decade-long feud during Christmas time. John Gustafson and Max Goldman, played by Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, have had this feud since high school, and it continues when a widow moves in next door. They go back to their high school days when it comes to trying to win over their new neighbor.
Another movie is “Rise of the Guardians.” This is a movie that brings in all of the aspects of childhood, and it lets the viewer go back to everything they know and love. The film has Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny and the Sandman banding together to save the dreams and beliefs from the Boogeyman. Jack Frost, a winter spirit who feels unseen, uses this as a way to get noticed and to be believed in. While some people don’t see this as primarily a Christmas movie, there are elements of different characters and story lines that make it an enjoyable film for the winter season.
These are all movies that are not as popularly known for being in the Christmas spirit, but they all have their own quirks. For some, it’s not always about the materialistic items for Christmas, but it’s the nostalgic films that can remind them of their childhood memories.
