Cardinal Crunch, SHS’s marketing class’s own popcorn product, was launched on Jan. 15 at the Kroger located on Emerson Avenue.
What started off as an assignment soon grew into an active project, pushing students to use skills taught in class to market an item sold in store.
“As we got going with the project, we realized we had a good opportunity to be able to teach students some real-life skills,” marketing teacher Donald Manning said.
After receiving the project, students began working together to market the product to customers. Students came up with the name, the slogan and the logo. After crafting the material, students got the information to Kroger to put the product together.
For a limited time, Cardinal Crunch will be sold at Kroger, allowing community members to support the school and the community.
“I’d say I am proud of the label, and … it actually turned out better than I thought,” junior Liam Wilson, a student involved in the project, said
As well as being sold in Kroger, Cardinal Crunch will be sold in the Fieldhouse for the next few games after its debut, available to spectators wanting to grab a snack during games.
“We are going to be selling it for a limited time,” Manning said. “We’re going to run it for a week in the Fieldhouse, during three events, and then, if sales go well, … the Adult Booster club may look at extending that run of popcorn in concession as well.”
On Thursday Feb 5., Cardinal Crunch will be sold in the Fieldhouse during the boys basketball game for people to give it a try. Purchase your tickets here.
Beginning as a project, Cardinal Crunch has made a long way to where it’s currently being sold. From a simple design to its final product, the product is now being sold at Kroger, reflecting the marketing student’s efforts and collaboration.
“It’s exciting to see students take something and make it applicable to the real world,” SHS alumna Adrianna Frederick, an employee for Kroger’s popcorn department, said. “I’m really excited to see how fast this grows.”
