Creativity vs. intelligence

Is AI art as controversial as it’s made out to be?
Creativity vs. intelligence

Art is one of those things in life that many people don’t fully understand and appreciate. Some may say that artists who create art digitally are “cheaters” and say that it’s “not real art” and that traditional art is the only real form of art, however, at times, this is not the case for AI artists.

It began its rise in popularity in 2014. Over the years, AI art has become more and more popular despite the constant controversy that it brings from many people, mainly artists because many artists use their art for commissions to get money, and with AI art, it makes it so anyone can get an art piece that they want without spending any money.

How AI art works is very simple. Using generators such as DALL·E and getimg.ai, users put in a topic that they would like to see as an art piece and the style they would like to see it in, and the generator creates one or more images from the topic. This means that AI art can be created in a matter of seconds while artists can spend hours to even days on one piece.

Since AIs are learning machines, AI art can be hard to pick out since they have learned how to generate pictures that look very much like actual art pieces. Even if someone does get truthfully accused of using AI to make their art, some people won’t care and might end up defending them whether it be because they don’t think that they used AI or because they don’t think it’s a big deal.

In the end, while AI art might forever be a thing in life, those who use it aren’t truly artists due to them not putting in the same amount of hard work into their “art” as real artists do.

Alyssa Cook, News Reporter, Staff Artist
Hi! My name is Alyssa Cook. I am a sophomore and this is my first year on The Journal staff. I am a News reporter and one of the artists. I am a huge fan of anything horror-related and overall love the horror genre. My favorite horror game series has to be Five Nights at Freddy’s with my favorite game being the fifth installment, also known as Sister Location. My favorite color is royal blue, however, I also like mint green. My favorite animal is a maned wolf, which does lead to my love of dogs, but I also really love cats. I love and enjoy all forms of art such as writing, theater, music, and drawing. I also enjoy math and science and am currently taking AP Pre-Calculus and DC Chemistry. I care a lot about my grades, so I always strive to get A’s and B’s so I can get into a good college. I’m so excited to see what my first year on the Journal will look like!
