She started on ‘Barney & Friends’ playing Gianna and now she’s bringing people together to see her in a new light. Most, if not all, know Selena from Disney Channel’s ‘Wizards of Waverly Place,’ but now she’s setting a new image for herself that wants to be detached from that part of her career.

In her documentary, “Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me,” Gomez brings her mental and physical health to the spotlight. This documentary has had an undeniable impact on thousands through sharing her experiences with mental health and her battle with Lupus. Whether it was the drama about Justin Bieber, or her passing a bill to begin a curriculum to focus on mental health and creating a safe space in schools to talk about mental illness, she is able to connect with her audience on a deeper level.

On paper, it seems like Gomez has it all and is unstoppable in her career, but the documentary gave her the opportunity to open up about wanting to give up and quit numerous times in her life. In the documentary, Gomez stated that she has always persevered  because she feels like she has been put on this earth for a reason, that she has a purpose . Gomez was able to peel back the layers of her fame to show us a raw image of her struggles along with the love and appreciation that she has for her family and community.

It was very inspiring to watch her and all that she has been able to accomplish and overcome. Watching it felt like sitting down with Gomez herself and talking with her about the struggles we are facing. She has always had a big sister personality and she is always there comforting people through her music, and now through this movie. Her ability to to open up about her mental and physical health was very admirable, especially since she has also been more private.

This documentary was wonderful to watch and to see how someone as influential as Gomez is as a normal person, and not a billboard’s top 100 celebrity, was very refreshing.
